Where better to celebrate Pi Day than at the Minnesota State Math Tournament? On Monday, March 14th, nine members of the Saint John’s Prep math team headed to St. Paul to compete in their final contest of the year. Saint John’s Prep qualified for state after taking first place in our division. At the state meet, competitors could expect questions from any topic that had been covered at the regional meets, making this meet the most challenging one yet.

The Saint John’s Prep team competed in Alpha Class, made up of the top sixteen teams out of the forty teams that attended. “We were against very, very large schools,” said math team coach Ms. Reuter. Being grouped with the bigger schools made the meet even more challenging, but Saint John’s Prep managed to come out with 13th place overall. Although the team was hurt by a difficult team test, our competitors performed strongly in the individual events. Jennifer Lee, a junior, was our school’s top-ranked individual, coming in at 29th out of 172 students. She was also the highest-scoring female contestant at the meet.

Sophomore Toto Chen had the honor of being selected as one of five students to compete in a pi recitation contest. The contest had a round robin format where the competitors went down the line and each said one digit at a time – an extremely difficult format considering that it is almost impossible to memorize pi except in chunks of digits. Toto recited more than one hundred digits and received a mini pie for her efforts. The contest was featured on Kare 11 News in the Twin Cities. The Saint John’s Prep math team members studied hard this year, but contrary to popular belief, the team is not all seriousness. Freshman Tina Chen says that one of the best parts is hanging out with friends. The math team has come a long way in its first year, and Ms. Reuter is excited to see where they will go next year. The students themselves, however, are probably ready to be done studying math problems for a while – at least until IB tests, ACT tests, SAT tests, and finals come around.
