Remembering Jacob Wetterling

Remembering Jacob Wetterling

Everyone in central Minnesota is connected by one name: Jacob Wetterling. It goes without saying that the community was in shock when information about his death finally surfaced. Everyone probably flashed back to when he first went missing in 1989, remembering the newspaper and TV reports that had filled the community. However, this was a little different for me. My mind went back to the fall of 2012, when Mrs. Anderson introduced our 6th grade class to History Day. At the time, I had no idea that choosing the topic of the abduction of Jacob Wetterling would have such an impact on my life, but given these recent developments, I have found myself reflecting more and more on what this project was really about. I remembered my time spent in interviews with the leading law enforcement official on the case, Pam Jensen, and with Patty Wetterling herself. Even though that was four years ago, I remember the emotions from those interviews and can only begin to imagine how both are feeling now.

But along with the tears, the one thing that really resonated with me was the relentless amount of hope that Pam and Patty had. They are an example for everyone that even in the darkest times, there is always a glimmer of light to be found.  Even with this devastating loss, I know that the Wetterling family will never feel alone. This community has nothing but love and support for them, and wherever they go, there will always be a porch light on for Jacob.
