Reopening of the Saint Cloud Library

Reopening of the Saint Cloud Library

Lara Swimmer

The Saint Cloud Public Library finally reopened on November 3rd after being closed for over two months due to a fire. Today (Nov. 11), I walked into the library and instantly got this light-headed feeling. I breathed in, and as weird as this might sound, I realized I had missed the smell of the library. I don’t know if you know this, but books have a certain smell, a kind of ancient dusty scent. It’s almost as if you can smell the wisdom that every book there carries. I can say for sure that I walked into the library empty-handed, and I walked out with three bags of books.

It was definitely difficult to be without a library for so long, and it made me realize that I took it for granted. It’s so nice to have a giant library that I can visit pretty much whenever I want, and read as many books as I want, for free. It’s a luxury that not everyone has access to. I love to read. Reading helps me escape from reality. I am glad the library is back, because it is where I get all my reading material. Honestly, it’s rare that you’ll see me without a book in my hand or in my bag. I almost always carry a book around with me in case I get bored or just feel like reading.

Throughout the months that the library was closed, the staff were very busy checking every single book for smoke damage. This process is not only extremely difficult, but also very time-consuming. They were asking for volunteers from the community, as they had so many books to check, and I definitely would have volunteered if I were old enough. Honestly, all there is to say is that I’m absolutely ecstatic that the library is back-in-business, and I can’t wait to read all of the books that I checked out.
