Boys’ Basketball Update

Alton Mies

With the excitement of winter break and the cold, dark days of January behind us, the SJP boys’ basketball team is entering the final stretch of our season. Our season started the beginning of October; a day after the conclusion of soccer. Captain’s practices changed to official practices, which were soon followed by games. Leading us to now to our final weeks of competition before playoffs. The expectations for the team this year were not very high. We had lost our lone senior and 2019 most valuable player, Derek Steichen, and many of us wondered whether or not the void he left would be able to be filled. After a rocky start to the season, another devastating blow occurred. Sophomore shooting guard, Anson Mies, an integral part of the team, was injured and declared out for the season. However, our team hard-work and determination was able to overcome adversity. After starting the season 1-3, we steadied our ship and won nine of the next twelve games. The increased production and effort from all of our players contributed to this run. During this time we had many positive moments. We were able to upset a solid and skilled team comprised of mostly seniors, the Holdingford Huskers, by the score of 76-75. We also took first place in the Eagle Ridge Academy Holiday Tournament. Our current record is 10-8. With eight regular season games remaining, the Johnnies are playing to win the opportunity to host a first round playoff game, or to even possibly to receive a bye. We currently sit in third place in our sub-section, which contains ten teams. We have a full slate of tough opponents to come, and we would greatly appreciate the attendance and support of any students, family, or faculty at our home games!  Come out to historic Guild Hall and cheer on the Johnnies!
