Irene Jiang

The 2020-21 Mock Trial Season has officially started! This year the team is comprised of captains Irene Jiang ’21 and Cassie Zeng ’21 with members Hana May ’21, Sylvia Johnson ’22, Clare Duffy ’22, Noelle Buehrer ’21, Oscar Cheeley ’22, Cambel Shepherd ’23, and Emma Krey ’24. Coaches Katie Bergstrom and Greg Mertz have returned as well, and the team is very excited to be working with them again. Over the past few weeks, the team has been working hard on practicing for this year’s competition season. All meets are going to be held virtually this year.

This year’s Mock Trial case is a topic we are all very familiar with: the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is a civil case based on contract law that deals with a complaint against Nixon Lodge (the defendant), an old hotel that was initially set as the location for the Knox couple’s wedding filed by the Knox family (the plaintiff). However, due to the pandemic, the hotel decided that it was not safe or proper for any large events to be scheduled and canceled the wedding with no refund, leading to the plaintiff’s outrage. The team’s first meet will take place on Wednesday, January 6, 2021, the first day Prep students come back to online learning after Christmas break.
